Frequently Asked Questions

Who ultimately decides on the input of any NMAHM® course content? My specific question is really about who is able to decide what elements go into NMAHM® courses, and what not?

There have been some really interesting points about these subjects in the last few years. Ultimately the primary legal and professional responsibilities for delivering a programme, its degree of development etc lies with the course presenter, and this is the case whether the presenter is an employer, employee, contractor etc. Many people seem currently to deliver training “based upon the NMAHM®”: this appears to be broadly defined in two different ways. It may be that in the course presenters mind, the short course cannot offer the same degree of input as MovES Ltd and is their way of being responsible, polite and professional.

However it has to be said that many course presenters are merely ‘lifting' bits from the NMAHM® without any thought of accountability to attendees, to the Approach itself, or to the professional status/ standing of MovES Ltd and/ or other NMAHM® practitioners.

With regard to who may wish to control/influence the content and/or process of any defined input regarding the NMAHM® – the list of parties can get potentially much larger. It must also be considered that these parties may have different agendas and needs from those more directly associated with the defined requirements of input, and that these may conflict creating additional pressures.

On the basis that specialist safety bodies such as the HSE take the view that no process should be altered or amended without sufficient knowledge and/or expertise of the elements involved , the responsibility for content and change of any educational process should be the remit of people who have defined expertise and/ or experience in the field of input. In any movement, exercise, and/or manual handling input, any such advice from any such individual should be warranted by any potential advisor having sufficient in-depth knowledge of:

  • movement-related risk assessment;
  • any advocated approach - to know its strengths and limitations (if any) as a system;
  • to know sufficiently about movement training processes;
  • to hold a relevant qualification with regard to the development and monitoring of educational processes, including proper evaluation of the effects and effectiveness of input, and methods to identify where any shortfalls in outcomes achieved may be highlighted and made good.
With regard to the NMAHM ® then the reasoning underpinning all core elements are well defined, and provide appropriately for their inclusion in any movement-related input. In addition the MovES Ltd organisation, plus its ongoing growth and development progressively provides for a specialist advisory/ consultancy role for any such agencies should any difficulties arise in practice.
