In talking to others, and checking the Internet it seems that most organisations involved in manual handling indicate that I could do a 4- or 5-day course, and become a trainer despite having no particular knowledge etc of manual handling before attending the course. In MovES Ltd courses it seems to take much longer to get to that stage and there are also defined pre-course requirements. Why is this?

The two MovES Ltd Directors have been working as healthcare professionals in both clinical and movement and manual handling education/training fields for many years,
and overviewing effects and effectiveness of many different inputs.
Probably the fairest of way of identifying the answer would be to ask you that if you were going to attend e.g. manual handling training what would you want/ expect of a prospective trainer in terms of knowledge, skills, other characteristics of a credible person and role model e.g. reliability and accuracy, knowing how to pace and develop you within any learning limits you may have, and/ or movement/ physiological limits you may have etc. Then score the list in terms of which courses/ methods meet your requirements.
The style of delivery of MovES Ltd courses sets up many opportunities for ongoing, and rigorous, evaluation of both the subject being taught, and
progress in/throughout module and
course processes. Use is made of ongoing informal and formal assessment as the basis for engaging others (course attendees, students, and/ or clients/ patients) in critiquing their practices and enabling refinement of personal, professional, and clinical skills development, and development and delivery of course processes. These practices, the critical review of the effects and effectiveness of previous course processes (MovES Ltd own, and others) together with ongoing review of contemporary evidence-based findings (including research, changes and refinements in legal and professional requirements and responsibilities, etc) associated with the various areas related to manual handling – and the increasing scope of what is to be covered within manual handling training, have informed the development of MovES Ltd courses to the specifications set out within this web-site.
The NMAHM® views movement as an all-encompassing concept. In relation to manual handling, MovES Ltd think in terms of the defined abilities that are required of a trainer from a professional and legal perspective, from an employment (insurer's risk) perspective,
and these abilities in terms of enabling people to appropriately construct and deliver educational processes, and these with regard to fully understanding the mechanisms (“causes”) of musculoskeletal injury and disorder, and the requirements to deal with people who are already musculoskeletally compromised. Time is also allocated within MovES Ltd course development processes for the degree of psychomotor skill development associated with each course level. This includes the time which MovES Ltd feel is necessary for a prospective trainer/ facilitator to accurately and reliably depict the practices to be achieved by his/ her own/ future learners.
