NMAHM®
What is the NMAHM®?
The Neuromuscular Approach to Human Movement (NMAHM)® is a holistic and systematic approach to the science and art of movement.
It is a principle-based process. The principles provide theoretical and factual information to validate the evidence chain underpinning the Approach. On a practical level these principles enable a unique versatility to its scope and practice, and support potential universal applicability wherever movement is appropriate as an intervention strategy. This all the more so where Efficient Movement and all that associates with this particular NMAHM® concept are desired.
The Approach encompasses movement activity in general, and also specialised areas of movement practice such as exercise and manual handling where health, safety and well-being are necessary considerations.
The NMAHM®'s Efficient Movement concept, philosophy, theory and practice are inherently focused to optimising health, safety and well-being.
The primary focus of the Approach concerns the relationship between movement and health, safety and well-being - and how each may influence the other (on a localised and/or generalised, direct or indirect, beneficial or negative basis).
Within the Approach supportive strategies are developed and offered to those who choose to begin to learn to move efficiently i.e. in a way that maintains or promotes overall health and well-being, supports or reduces the potential for initial or further musculoskeletal injury, and/or to enable management and recovery from current or ongoing injury, symptoms and/or signs.
Where/Who has the NMAHM® come from?
The Approach was first described in 1982 by John R. Vasey MCSP, DipTP & Lesley Crozier MCSP, DipTP,
Assoc Member of Inst of Biology. It represented a stage of consolidation and development of a methodological approach with the conceptual origins traceable to the early 1930s and particularly to the extensive work of T. McClurg Anderson.
It continues to be reviewed, developed and updated as necessary since its introduction: firstly by Lesley Crozier MCSP DipTP, MHPCR, Assoc. of Institute of Biology and more recently primarily by Lesley Crozier and Sheila Cozens BSc (Hons), MCSP, Lic Ac, Cert Ed, AssocMember ICAK(UK), Certificated Coach (Personal/ Life; Corporate & Executive) – and increasingly by MovES Ltd's students and recognised NMAHM® practitioners as they develop the necessary experience and understanding to be able to knowledgeably and usefully contribute to such processes.
